The Public Works Project: a Successful Partner for the Donor Community
Based on World Bank data, Yemen has experienced a significant 52% decline in real GDP per capita over the past seven years. This economic contraction has left approximately 21.6 million Yemenis, which constitutes two-thirds of the population, requiring urgent humanitarian aid. The country faces additional challenges, including escalating commodity prices and the impact of climate change. For vulnerable Yemeni families, the threat of food insecurity looms large, making it a critical concern in the current landscape. Over 17 million people in Yemen are grappling with food insecurity, highlighting the severity of the situation.

UNESCO Office in the Gulf and Yemen commends the partnership with the Public Works Project
The UNESCO Office in the Gulf state & Yemen stressed the importance of partnership with the PWP during the coming period in implementing the coming phase of the #cash_for_work project to improve livelihood opportunities for the youth of the historical cities in Yemen.
The ESPECRP social protection initiative provides 200 thousand working days.
In light of a shortage of job opportunities and sources of income, improving the standard of living through providing a source of income is a priority held by the majority of Yemenis, particularly the displaced and poorest groups.

PWP Supports Humanitarian Needs
Over the past six years, PWP has been working to meet the humanitarian needs of Yemenis most affected by the current situation, as well as the poorest groups of society through sustainable projects that are closely linked to their daily lives.
Since the United Nations announced that Yemen is experiencing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis to date, PWP, with support from the donors’ community led by the World Bank in partnership with UNDP, UNOPS, IsDB, FAO, EU, UNESCO, and JICA, has been making strides to bolster its contribution to improve living conditions for the majority of Yemenis by building services projects that have had a profound impact in supporting livelihoods and service delivery
Environmental and Social Management Framework: Yemen Emergency Crisis Response Project (ECRP)
This Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) is prepared by UNDP to ensure the Yemen Emergency Crisis Response Project (ECRP) is consistent with UNDP’s Social and Environmental Standards (SES) (www.undp.org/ses) and the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Policies. The SES require that all UNDP projects consider the potential environmental and social opportunities that a project may generate and ensure that adverse social and environmental risks and impacts are avoided, minimized, mitigated and managed.

The Economic, Social, and Environmental Impacts of the Social Protection Projects (SPECRP)
As a strategy pursued by PWP, the application of the principle of transparency aims at ensuring the sustainability of implemented subprojects and whether they meet the needs of the communities. An environmental, social, and economic impact assessment was carried out for the interventions that were completed during a period ranging from 3-6 months to measure whether they have had any impact in improving the living conditions of vulnerable communities and the level of food security and whether they addressed the negative impacts of climate change.
